Commencing in 2011 the Future Direction Network (FDN) will implement its first program offering at Westfields Sports and Fairfield High School.
The FDN program will be complemented by The University of Sydney’s social inclusion program COMPASS – find your way to higher education program.
FDN will deliver a combination of ambition and aspiration building programs in conjunction with mechanisms that will help bridge student information gaps regarding university study.
FDN will identify guest speakers who have originated from the western suburbs of Sydney and have gone on to graduate from university into successful careers. The guest speakers will tell “their story” to students about where they have grown up, the challenges they faced as a student and the career path that they have engaged in.
FDN will also produce a motivational and informational DVD that will be distributed to students and also accessible on the FDN website that contains interviews with a cross section of successful university graduates from South West Sydney. It is hoped that the interviews contained within the DVD will inspire students to challenge themselves and also inform them about various career paths and universities.
FDN will also facilitate the transport of students to and from university open days to help make these events more accessible. Attending a university open day can unlock a vast network of resources for students, inevitably leaving them better informed. However students living in South West Sydney may find it very challenging and intimidating to attend an open day at a city university on their own or in a small group effectively deterring them from attending.
Lastly, the FDN website will act as a platform provider of information regarding financial assistance programs and scholarships available.
